What is a hydrosol, exactly?
When plant material is steam-distilled, two things come out of the still: the essential oil, and the water that carried the steam through the plant. That water is the hydrosol. It holds the water-soluble aromatic compounds the oil leaves behind, at a strength your skin can take undiluted. An essential oil needs a carrier before it touches skin. A hydrosol does not.
How a hydrosol differs from rose water?
Most products sold as rose water in India are made by blending rose essence or fragrance into water, usually with a preservative and a pH adjuster. A rose hydrosol is distilled — nothing is added and nothing is diluted afterwards. The difference shows up in the scent, which is softer and far less sweet than fragrance-based rose water, and in how skin responds to it over a few weeks of use.
How to use a hydrosol?
Mist onto clean skin before your serum or oil, so the layers that follow have something to hold onto. Use it again through the day as a refresh, over makeup if you like. Mix it into a clay mask in place of water. For the scalp, part the hair in sections, spray directly onto the roots and massage in with your fingertips.
Is a hydrosol the same as a toner?
Not quite. Most toners contain added actives, humectants and preservatives. A hydrosol is a single distilled ingredient with nothing added. It can occupy the same step in your routine that a toner would, but it is doing something simpler.
Can I use a hydrosol every day?
Yes. Hydrosols are dilute by nature and are made for daily use on the face, body or scalp. If your skin is highly reactive, patch test on the inner arm first.
How long does a hydrosol last once opened?
Because there are no preservatives, use it within about six months of opening. Refrigerating it helps, and so does keeping the sprayer from touching your skin.
